چکیده

A method of fabricating micromachined Corner Cube Reflectors (CCRs) with high surface flatness and accurate control of mirror angle is demonstrated. A parallel, automated three-dimensional self-assembly process is presented, using bonded silicon-on-insulator material and out-of-plane rotation powered by the surface tension of thick photoresist pads. Precise alignment is achieved by minimising the number of movable parts and controlling the assembly with a mechanical limiter. The optical performance of the assembled components is demonstrated, and an angular alignment accuracy of < 3 mrad is achieved.

Design, fabrication and test of self-assembled optical corner cube reflectors

Active and passive micromachined corner cube reflectors (CCRs) with high surface flatness and precise assembly are demonstrated by out-of-plane rotation of bonded silicon parts powered by the surface tension of thick photoresist pads. A two-mask fabrication process is used, and an angular alignment accuracy of <0.18◦ is achieved by minimizing the number of movable parts and controlling the asse...

Optical MEMS in Bonded Silicon on Insulator

Bonded silicon on insulator (BSOI) material provides an excellent solution for optical MEMS devices, which typically require optical surfaces with high flatness and low roughness to be combined with high quality mechanical parts and low power, high force microactuators. This paper will review a number of different approaches to optical MEMS, including surface tension self-assembly for 3D compon...

LAGEOS asymmetric reflectivity and corner cube

8 [1] Accurate laser tracking of LAGEOS satellites, together with gravitational effects, 9 allows investigation a number of fine nongravitational perturbations in their orbit. Several 10 of these forces are reasonably interpreted in terms of known physical phenomena. 11 Postulated asymmetry in reflectivity of LAGEOS hemispheres is an exception. Here we 12 show that in spite of a recent suggesti...

Cat’s eye quantum well modulating retro-reflectors for free- space optical communications

Modulating retro-reflectors (MRR) couple passive optical retro-reflectors with electro-optic modulators to allow free-space optical communication with a laser and pointing/acquisition/tracking system required on only one end of the link. In operation a conventional free space optical communications terminal, the interrogator, is used on one end of the link to illuminate the MRR on the other end...

Lunar eclipse observations reveal anomalous thermal performance of Apollo reflectors

Laser ranging measurements during the total lunar eclipse on 2010 December 21 verify previously suspected thermal lensing in the retroreflectors left on the lunar surface by the Apollo astronauts. Signal levels during the eclipse far exceeded those historically seen at full moon, and varied over an order of magnitude as the eclipse progressed. These variations can be understood via a straightfo...
